Get Healthy, Live Well

Leadership Committee

No one knows the challenges Haralson County faces better than its residents. That’s why Healthy Haralson is led by the community.

The goal of the Healthy Haralson Leadership Committee is to ensure all residents have equitable opportunities to get healthy and live well. The committee focuses its efforts on four essential areas:

  • Healthy minds and bodies
  • Community resources
  • Senior needs
  • Substance misuse

Together, team members within each task force are working to identify obstacles to resident health and wellness and find innovative ways to overcome them.

To get involved or for more information about Healthy Haralson, contact Tonya Fulks, outreach operations manager, at 770-812-8811 or tfulks@tanner.org.

Youth Mental Health Programs

All kids deserve to thrive physically and emotionally.

Healthy Haralson aims to help children, teens and adults recognize and respond to symptoms of mental health issues, while also increasing access to behavioral health services for youth.

When a child is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, we are here to help with early intervention and expert counseling.

  • Willowbrooke at Tanner offers free behavioral health training to individuals who work with children or adolescents. Through Youth Mental Health First Aid USA, an eight-week public education program, participants learn to recognize risks and early warning signs of adolescent behavioral health challenges and respond effectively in a crisis.
  • School-based counselors are embedded in area school systems, employed by Willowbrooke at Tanner to make mental health services more accessible for area youth.
  • The Junior Leadership Team, a partnership with community institutions, encourages young leaders to play a role in addressing community-wide challenges, such as behavioral health.

Community Resources

To increase awareness of existing community resources, Healthy Haralson has developed an online community resources guide and automated telephone line for residents to access a listing of available resources.

The guide is divided into areas of need such as food, shelter, mental health resources and substance misuse services. To access the guide, you can click here, call 678-647-HELP (4357).

Increasing Provider Resources

To help reduce barriers that are preventing Haralson County residents from receiving the care they need, Get Healthy, Live Well’s Healthy Haralson committee is working to increase provider resources to clinical and community services.

Higgins General Hospital in Bremen

Haralson County’s only hospital, Higgins General Hospital joined Tanner Health System in 1998. Since then, Tanner has invested substantially in the critical access facility by:

  • Expanding the hospital’s emergency department and diagnostic imaging unit.
  • Improving its inpatient facilities.
  • Building a new medical office building to house the many additional specialist services that have come to Bremen through the community’s affiliation with Tanner.

We have continued to invest in health care throughout Haralson County, with three primary care practices:

We also provide pediatrics services and an urgent care providing walk-in care for minor medical emergencies and more. Most recently, Tanner built a new surgical services unit at Higgins General Hospital. The unit expands access to needed surgical care, including:

  • Gastroenterology screenings like colonoscopies
  • General surgical services
  • Reconstructive and plastic surgery
  • Ear, nose and throat care
  • Eye surgery
  • And more

Additionally, we have also established a primary stroke center at Higgins General Hospital, making lifesaving stroke care more readily available for Haralson County residents.

Through Healthy Haralson, improved access to medical care in Haralson County will remain a priority. We are continuing to find innovative ways to improve access to primary care providers, dentists and mental health providers while promoting existing resources through our community resource guide

Substance Misuse

recovery highway

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 60% of Georgia’s 55 counties with drug overdose rates higher than the national average were in rural areas.

One way Healthy Haralson is addressing this problem is through a partnership with local government officials. First responders have been trained on how to carry and properly administer naloxone (Narcan) to treat someone who has overdosed on a narcotic.

Administered promptly after an overdose, naloxone can reverse the effects of an overdose. The medication revives the user so they can receive additional medical attention, giving them a chance at recovery.

Policies on how to properly carry, store and administer naloxone have been implemented by the following agencies:
The policy implemented by Bremen's fire and police departments impacts 6,421 residents. Haralson County Fire Department's policy impacts 22,423 residents.

Read how Get Healthy, Live Well honored area resident Debbie Neal for her work to make naloxone more widely available in west Georgia.
