It’s 5 a.m. and the alarm goes off reminding you to get up for your morning workout.
But the thought of getting out of your warm bed and stepping out into the cold winter air causes you to hit the snooze button too many times. Does this sound like you? If so, there are several things you can do to make working out in cold weather more bearable.
1. Exercise at home. Don’t let Old Man Winter discourage you from getting and staying fit. There are several fitness activities you can do from home like dancing, weightlifting and yoga. Whether you work out with your favorite aerobics DVD or crank up the tunes and have your own little private dance party, exercising at home is a great way to make sure you get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, five days a week.
2. Go to the gym. If you already have a gym membership, don’t let it go to waste. Many gyms offer a variety of classes and equipment to help you achieve your fitness goals, so take advantage of them. If you haven’t signed up for a gym membership, this is a perfect opportunity to do so. The New Year is one of the best times to sign up if you’re looking for a good deal on membership fees.
3. Dress in layers. If you decide to brave the cold and venture outside, dress warmly and in layers. Adults and children should wear:
- A hat
- A scarf or knit mask to cover the face and mouth
- Mittens, which are warmer than gloves
- Several layers of loose-fitting clothing
- Sleeves that are snug at the wrist
- A water- and wind-resistant jacket or coat
Make sure the outer layer of your clothing is woven tightly to prevent heat loss. Silk, polypropylene or wool inner layers of clothing will hold more body heat than cotton.
4. Check the weather. Before heading outside, check the local weather forecast. The temperature isn’t the only thing you want to consider. You also want to know about moisture and wind chill levels. Pay attention to warnings about icy conditions, severe temperature drops and storms.
5. Join a group. Join a local walking group or track club. Having a support system in place can help you stay motivated to keep up with your exercise routine in the winter. Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well initiative has partnered with the Bremen Parks and Rec Walkers to help residents get and stay in shape. The Bremen Parks and Rec Walkers meet Monday through Friday, as early as 8 a.m., to walk the facility’s paved, one-mile loop.
