Tanner, West Georgia Track Club Host Nutrition Talk

Whether you are a beginner walker or an advanced marathoner, what you use to fuel your body can make a huge difference to your performance.

To help residents make the most of their run toward fitness, Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well and the West Georgia Track Club is hosting a special nutrition talk, “Eat to Excel: Fueling Your Body to Get the Most Out of Your Workout.” The free event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton in Classroom 2.

The talk will be led by Get Healthy, Live Well’s registered dietitian, Melissa Brillhart, MA, RD, LD, who will share simple nutrition tips to help you feel and perform your best.

“Fueling up your body by eating the right foods and drinking the right fluids will help keep your engine running when you work out,” said Brillhart. “During the talk, you will learn how nutrition affects performance and what you can do to keep your engine performing at its best.”

Adequate food and fluid should be consumed before, during and after a workout, according to the American Dietetic Association and American College of Sports Medicine. This will help your body improve recovery time and maintain glucose concentration during exercise. It will also help maximize performance.

“When it comes to getting the most out of your workout, nutrition is key,” said Brillhart. “Your body needs the right balance of carbohydrates, fat, fluids, minerals, protein and vitamins to perform its best. For runners, snacks like a small smoothie or a whole-wheat muffin two hours before a run can help boost glucose levels and increase muscle carbohydrate stores to help them run longer.”

The talk is open to all levels of physical activity enthusiasts with an emphasis on walkers and runners. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 18. Visit GetHealthyLiveWell.org to register today.

Before the talk, join the West Georgia Track Club for their 8 a.m. group run starting at the Castle Playground on the Carrollton GreenBelt, located on Northside Drive in Carrollton.
