Tanner Repeats Among Metro Area’s ‘Best Places to Work’

For the second time in two years, Tanner Health System has gained distinction as one of the top destinations for healthcare professionals in metro Atlanta.

The health system was again named among the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “Best Places to Work” for 2017, placing in the top 10 of the business periodical’s “extra large employers” category, which includes organizations with 500 or more employees.

Kennesaw-based construction firm Brasfield and Gorrie earned the top spot on the list of large employers, followed by the spinal cord rehabilitation specialty facility Shepherd Center — the only other healthcare organization in the extra large employers category — as well as real estate management firm JLL and telecommunications service Cricket Wireless. Tanner ranked 10th.

Tanner itself is no stranger the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s list — the health system previously ranked among the metro area’s Best Places to Work in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016. With more than 3,000 employees, Tanner is one of the largest employers in the region.

“Our ability to deliver exceptional care is based on our ability to attract and retain exceptional staff,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “There are staffing shortages throughout health care, from physicians to nurses to technologists. To continue providing exceptional care, we must not only create an environment where patients want to be, but where professionals want to be as well.”

Each year, Atlanta Business Chronicle works in partnership with Omaha, Neb.-based Quantum Workplace to survey the metro area’s employers and find those that have discovered how to become one of Atlanta’s Best Places to Work. To compile Atlanta’s 2017 list, the newspaper asked readers to nominate workplaces in metro Atlanta. Nominations were accepted during the past year on the paper’s website. Rankings are determined by the overall scores through those employee surveys.

Employees at participating companies and organizations were surveyed by Quantum Workplace from early July through mid-August 2017, answering questions about their workplaces that Quantum then scored.

According to Quantum Workplace, top-performing organizations know that employee engagement drives business outcomes. Engaged employees are more productive, more profitable, more customer-focused, and more likely to stay.

The health system has invested in new facilities, technologies and workforce development in recent years. Tanner offers competitive benefits packages, a matching 401(k) benefit, a robust employee wellness program and more.

Earlier this year, Tanner was named to Modern Healthcare’s list of the nation’s 2017 Best Places to Work in Healthcare. There were 150 employers on Modern Healthcare’s list, including healthcare providers, biotech companies, laboratories, staffing agencies and others.

“I’m extremely proud of the team of professionals we have at Tanner,” said Howard. “They’re delivering exceptional care, they’re mission-focused and extremely dedicated. They make Tanner a great place to work.”
