Tanner Labs Earn CAP Accreditation

The laboratories at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Higgins General Hospital will continue their accreditations after recent on-site inspections from the College of American Pathologists’ (CAP) accreditation program.

Lawrence Alligood, MD, a board-certified pathologist and medical director of the Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton lab, and David Rydzewski, MD, a board-certified pathologist and medical director of the Higgins General Hospital lab, were notified of the continued accreditation. The labs are among more than 7,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

The CAP laboratory accreditation program is recognized by the federal government as being equal-to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection programs. CAP has been accrediting laboratories for about 50 years.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and the laboratory’s record and overall management as part of a process designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients. More information about CAP can be found online at www.cap.org.

The laboratories at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Higgins General Hospital offer a full range of phlebotomy, histology and pathology services. The Carrollton lab also offers blood bank services accredited by the AABB—formerly the American Association of Blood Banks—and the federal Food and Drug Administration.
