Tanner Again Among Metro Area’s ‘Best Places to Work’



For the third consecutive year, Tanner Health System has placed among the top employers in metro Atlanta.

The health system was again named among the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “Best Places to Work” for 2018, placing in the top 10 of the business periodical’s “extra large employers” category, which includes organizations with 500 or more employees.

Only two other healthcare organizations are featured among the “extra large” employers list: Sandy Springs-based Northside Hospital and the spinal cord rehabilitation specialty facility Shepherd Center.

Tanner itself is no stranger the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s list — the health system previously ranked among the metro area’s Best Places to Work in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2017. With more than 3,000 employees, Tanner is one of the largest employers in the region.

“Our ability to deliver exceptional care is based on our ability to attract and retain exceptional staff,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “There are staffing shortages throughout health care, from physicians to nurses to technologists. Each year, Atlanta Business Chronicle works in partnership with Omaha, Neb.-based Quantum Workplace to survey the metro area’s employers and find those that have discovered how to become one of Atlanta’s Best Places to Work.

To compile Atlanta’s 2018 list, the newspaper asked readers to nominate workplaces in metro Atlanta. Nominations were accepted during the past year on the paper’s website. Rankings are determined by the overall scores through those employee surveys.

According to Quantum Workplace, top-performing organizations know that employee engagement drives business outcomes. Engaged employees are more productive, more profitable, more customer-focused, and more likely to stay.

At Tanner, employees and patients alike are enjoying investments the health system has made in new facilities, technologies and clinical services. Tanner offers competitive benefits packages, a matching 401(k) benefit, a robust employee wellness program and more. Healthcare professionals are also interested in the health system’s clinical service development, including the recent establishment of certified chest pain centers, primary stroke centers and more. The health system is opening a new Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton later this year, as well as a new emergency department and surgical services unit at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton. The organization has also expanded the surgical services unit at Higgins General Hospital in Bremen and opened a new hospital in Wedowee, Alabama: Tanner Medical Center/East Alabama.

The health system also has been adding staff recently in preparation for the implementation of its new electronic health record system, Epic.
