After more than a year of construction, east Alabama’s newest medical facility is ready to be showcased to the public.
Tanner/East Alabama, located at 1030 South Main Street in Wedowee, will host a community open house on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT. Residents are invited to meet the staff from Tanner Primary Care of Wedowee—formerly the Wedowee Clinic—and be among the first to see the new, state-of-the-art medical facility soon to be available in their community.
“The community is at the center of everything we do,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “That’s why we’ve built this new facility. We’re going to be here to make sure that people have access to care.”
The two-story, 26,000-square-foot facility will offer walk-in care for minor medical emergencies and preventive medicine for every member of the family through Tanner Primary Care of Wedowee, which has offices on the first floor. The second floor will offer space for various specialists from Tanner’s medical staff—including cardiologists, cancer specialists, obstetrics and gynecology specialists and others—to rotate through, bringing specialties to east Alabama that have not previously been available in the region.
Tanner has been working in partnership with Wedowee Hospital, as well as community leaders from Randolph County to develop the new facility. Tanner/East Alabama sits on a 15-acre lot owned by the health system, affording Tanner plenty of space for future expansion as necessary.
“Access to care is one of the major obstacles to improving a community’s health,” said Howard. “Many people are inclined to forgo treatment rather than traveling some distance to access care. With Tanner/East Alabama, we’re bringing those services closer to the people we serve, making it easier on residents and families to receive the care they need.”
Tanner Primary Care of Wedowee will begin seeing patients in the Tanner/East Alabama facility on Monday, May 6.
