Raine Davis Wins Grand Prize at Zucchini 500 Race in Carrollton

Raine Davis, 6, of Carrollton squashed the competition Saturday to take the checkered flag at the Zucchini 500 race at the Cotton Mill Farmers’ Market in Carrollton.

Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well, in partnership with the farmers’ market, hosted the race where participants raced their cars — built out of squash — on a custom 16-foot track provided by The Blake House

Participants in the Zucchini 500 built their own race cars out of squash or, if in a pickle, cucumbers. The grand prize trophy was given for the fastest and most creative car of the day, which belonged to Raine.

The event was part of Get Healthy, Live Well’s Power of Produce (POP) Club, a nationally recognized program to empower kids ages 4 to 12 to make healthy food choices. The POP club will be at the Cotton Mill Farmers’ Market at 609 Dixie Street from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first and third Saturdays through September. The club will also be at the Highway 78 Farmer and Craft Market at 106 Temple Street in Villa Rica from 4 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays through September.

The club provides an opportunity for children to engage in the local food system through fun learning activities. After participating in the activities, each child receives $2 in POP Bucks to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at the farmers’ market.
