Free Diabetes Prevention Classes Starting March 11

More than 84 million Americans — 1 in 3 adults — have prediabetes, a dangerous condition that puts them at elevated risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

And in the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled to more than 30 million Americans who are at an increased risk for a long list of serious health problems, including blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke and loss of toes, feet or legs.

But diabetes can often be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active.

To help people in west Georgia avoid getting diabetes, Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is offering free Diabetes Prevention Program classes. Since 2014, the Diabetes Prevention Program has helped more than 350 participants slash their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.

The evidence-based lifestyle change program was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help people cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. Participants, many of whom are pre-diabetic or at high risk for developing diabetes, strive to lose 7 percent of their body weight and get 150 minutes of physical activity a week.

With more than 75 community-trained volunteers, Tanner was the first hospital in Georgia to receive full recognition by the CDC for participant achievement of DPP program goals and continues to hold this status after receiving an average of 5.5 percent participant weight loss at the end of the yearlong program.

The Diabetes Prevention Program focuses on eating a healthier diet by reducing fat and calories, and keeping a food journal. The classes also offer strategies for getting more physical activity. The small-group setting also provides support and motivation. Classes meet for one hour each week for 16 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance classes for the remainder of the year.
