Breastfeeding Services

Breastmilk is the best source of nutrition for your baby. Most women can breastfeed, or pump breast milk, successfully. However, it often takes patience, practice and support.

Our specialized team of lactation consultants and nurses are here to support you and help you reach your breastfeeding goals.

We provide instruction at the bedside after delivery and continue to offer support for as long as you need it.

Why breastfeed?

Research shows that breast milk contains the nutrients, enzymes and infection-fighting antibodies to help babies thrive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and that breastmilk be the sole source of nutrition for infants until six months of age. Breastfeeding is then recommended to continue for at least two years.

Breastfeeding benefits for the mother:

  • Reduced risk of ovarian and breast cancer
  • Reduced risk of postpartum hemorrhage
  • Helps your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy state
  • Reduced risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease

Breastfeeding benefits for the baby:

  • Reduced risk of childhood obesity
  • Perform better on intelligence tests
  • Reduced risk of SIDS
  • Helps prevent ear infections and asthma
  • Reduced risk of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
  • Reduced risk of Leukemia
  • Breastfeeding shapes the palate, resulting in less need for orthodontic work later

Lactation consultants at Tanner

Our lactation consultants can visit with you and your newborn while you’re in the hospital. They can also see you after you have discharged home with your baby.

They will work with you on positioning and latching techniques and discuss common concerns with new parents such as signs your baby is getting enough at the breast and how to care for yourself while breastfeeding or pumping.

Call 770-812-9711 for more information.
