This July, Discover the Super Powers of Parks and Recreation

Residents in west Georgia don’t need to be bitten by a radioactive spider to discover that they have super powers. They just need to visit their nearest park or recreation center to find super powers they didn’t know they had.

This July, Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is celebrating Park and Recreation Month. Get Healthy, Live Well encourages community members to discover all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform their daily lives. Community parks and recreation facilities not only provide places to get fit and stay healthy, they also provide essential services that help improve quality of life.

The month-long celebration is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

“July is the perfect time to highlight the benefits parks and recreation provide,” said Patricia Mitchell, wellness and prevention coordinator at Get Healthy, Live Well. “Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for adults and children.”

Get Healthy, Live Well will celebrate Park and Recreation Month by bringing its interactive Kids Exhibit to the Carrollton Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department on July 6. The Kids Exhibit is a traveling exhibit that teaches kids ages 6 to 12 about healthy lifestyles in a fun and exciting way. The exhibit features nine educational stations, each designed to keep kids engaged and excited about learning to make healthy choices.

After visiting each station, kids walk away with a better understanding of what it takes to get and stay healthy. The event is part of Get Healthy, Live Well’s #SummerOfHealth campaign. Parents are encouraged to share photos of their kids having a great time at the exhibit by posting on social media with the hashtag #SummerOfHealth.

NRPA is celebrating the month by hosting a selfie photo contest. From July 4-31, NRPA will issue weekly challenges for people to get out in their parks and recreation facilities and discover their super powers. Weekly prizes will be awarded. The contest can be entered via Facebook or by uploading a photo to Twitter and Instagram using #SuperJuly and #SuperParkSelfie.

Visit www.nrpa.org/July for official rules and details. NRPA also encourages all people that support parks and recreation to share their photos and love of parks using the hashtag #SuperJuly on social media.
