Tanner Offers Class for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one who is ill or living with a disability can be stressful emotionally, financially and physically for those who care for them.

Research has found high rates of anxiety and depression among family caregivers, as well as increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. They often feel they have no control over events, and that feeling of powerlessness has a significant negative impact on a caregivers’ health.

That’s why Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well is offering a six-week education program that will teach caregivers how to take care of themselves while taking care of their loved ones. If you care for a friend, neighbor or relative, the Powerful Tools for Caregivers program is for you.

Classes will meet on Thursdays from July 6 to Aug. 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tanner on Robinson conference room located at 115 Robinson Avenue in Carrollton.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an evidence-based program that provides tools and strategies to better handle the unique challenges family caregivers face. This program will provide caregivers with the tools to: reduce personal stress; practice self-care; communicate effectively with medical providers, family members or paid help; utilize community resources; make tough decisions; set goals; and solve problems. It also provides caregivers with the tools to reduce anger, depression and guilt.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers, which was developed by Legacy Caregiver Services and Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, is a national program sustained by extensive collaborations with community-based organizations.
