Southern Hills Christian Church Wins Bible Quiz Bowl

Three representatives from Southern Hills Christian Church proved their knowledge of the scripture to win an interfaith Bible Quiz Bowl in Carrollton on Saturday.

The quiz bowl was held at the Dr. Tracy P. Stallings Community Center, hosted by Overcomers Christian Center and Tanner Health System’s Faith in Health committee, part of the Get Healthy, Live Well Coalition, a multi-sector community coalition working to increase access to healthy food, increase physical activity, reduce chronic disease risks and eliminate tobacco use in Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties.

The Faith in Health committee churches include A Place of Refuge, Agape of God Ministry, Inc., Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Church Without Walls, Covenant Word Ministry, First Baptist Church of Bowdon, First Baptist Church of Carrollton, First Baptist Church of Villa Rica, Friendship Baptist Church, Overcomers Christian Center, Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Southern Hills Christian Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church and Word of Truth Christian Church.

“When we talk about faith-based wellness, we talk about health of the mind, body and spirit,” said Phyllis Head, community outreach coordinator at Get Healthy, Live Well. “This particular challenge was all about the mind.”

Churches participating in the quiz bowl included A Place of Refuge, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Friendship Baptist Church, Overcomers Christian Center, Southern Hills Christian Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church and Word of Truth Christian Church.

Pastor Bradley Bell and local writer Mimi Gentry emceed the event.

Southern Hills Christian Church defeated Word of Truth Christian Church in the final round of the quiz bowl, taking home the prestigious “Hallelujah Cup.” The tournament also included a Children’s Bible Bee. All children in attendance were welcome to participate.

The event was free to the public and the Faith in Health committee asked adults to donate at least $1, which will support the Bremen Food and Clothing Bank

The Bible Quiz Bowl marked the third time these churches have worked together to help improve the community’s health. In March, Tabernacle Baptist Church in partnership with the Faith in Health committee hosted the Hoops for Health Basketball Challenge. In January, Southern Hills Christian Church hosted the Resolution Run 5K in partnership with the Faith in Health committee.

A healthy tailgate cooking competition is planned later in the fall.
