Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church Hosts Health Event

Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well initiative hosted an educational health event at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Carrollton on July 26 as part of an ongoing effort to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The event, which was held right after the church service, provided educational health information and gave people a chance to assess their risk of certain health conditions.

“Partnering with churches lets us go to where people already are and meet them in their community — instead of asking them to come to us — so we are making it as convenient as possible for them and improving their access to health information,” said Mahaya Clark, community coordinator for Tanner Community Benefit.

The event was part of a series of health events held at local African-American churches in Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties to raise awareness of steps people can take to focus on healthy living. Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church was the fifth church to host a Get Healthy, Live Well health event.

One of the highlights was a question-and-answer session offered by Issac Vargas, DO, a family practice physician with Tanner Primary Care of Carrollton.

There were lots of fun and educational activities including:

  • Clinical health assessment
  • Diabetes risk assessment
  • Healthy kids corner
  • Healthy cooking demo
  • Smoothie bike demo
  • Tobacco cessation information

About 20 people attended the event at the church, which is led by Pastor Charles Thomas.

Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well initiative is working to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent chronic disease for residents of Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties by raising awareness of health disparities, reducing obesity rates, eliminating tobacco use, increasing physical activity and improving nutrition. The initiative is funded by a Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH) grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
