Nineteen Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coaches Trained

Nineteen volunteers with Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well initiative were recently trained as coaches to facilitate the National Diabetes Prevention Program, which teaches about prediabetes and the steps that participants can take through the program to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

The new coaches will lead a year-long series of classes designed to reduce the risk of diabetes. Included in the group of coaches are facilitators from local churches and Latinos United of Carroll County Community Clinic, which will hold the class in Spanish.

The free classes will be held throughout Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties, which all rank above the national average for adults diagnosed with diabetes. The schedule of classes will be released soon.

With modest changes in behavior, the program can help people lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. The changes that can be achieved through the National Diabetes Prevention Program can help participants with prediabetes reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.

If you are interested in attending a class, register for the “interest” list located in the calendar at www.GetHealthyLiveWell.org or call 770.214.CARE. You will be notified when the class schedule is available.
