Go From the Couch to a 5K This Summer!

Don’t spend what’s left of the summer on the couch mindlessly watching TV or scrolling down your news feed on Facebook seeing everyone else taking part in fitness challenges. Get up, get moving and join Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well in celebrating the #SummerOfHealth by participating in a walk-to-jog program that will have you ready to run a 5K in just eight weeks.

Get Healthy, Live Well and the West Georgia Track Club will be kicking off Move It Mondays on Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. with a meet and greet at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton in Classroom 1 where you can register for the program. Park in the Dixie Street parking deck and drop in anytime between 5 and 6 p.m. Regular sessions for the program will begin on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. on the walking trail (commonly referred to as the Tanner loop) on the Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton campus. Parking is available in the Clinic Avenue Parking Deck near the emergency department.

“Joining Move It Mondays is a great way to meet new people and get more physical activity into your day,” said Patricia Mitchell, wellness and prevention coordinator at Tanner’s Get Healthy, Live Well. “Getting as little as 30 minutes of exercise a day will get you on the road to better health.”

According to the American Heart Association, 30 minutes of physical activity a day, five days a week, can reduce the risk of cancer, depression, heart disease, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and more. The Move It Mondays program includes weekly group sessions featuring a combination of walking and running. Tailored for beginners with flexibility for each person to adjust to his or her individual needs, the walking program pairs beginners with experienced joggers from the West Georgia Track Club.

The program gives people striving to improve their cardio workout an opportunity to do it with accountability, according to West Georgia Track Club President Christin Woodard.

“Free coaching and finding accountability with working out has helped many past participants improve their fitness level and healthy lifestyle goals,” said Woodard.
