Bremen Senior Center Walkers Go the Distance This Summer

It may be the lazy days of summer, but participants in the Bremen Senior Center’s 50-mile summer walking challenge didn’t use that as an excuse to sit around and swelter.

As part of its #SummerOfHealth campaign, Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well partnered with Bremen Parks and Recreation to develop the 10-week walking program, which lasted from May through July. To help kick off the program, one of the senior center’s members created a mileage chart that included cut-out figures representing each participant. Participants used a walking log to keep track of mileage and moved their figure forward for every five miles they completed.

Sixteen participants conquered the challenge, with some individuals finishing more than 200 miles of walking throughout the program.

“We are so grateful to have Tanner sponsor these types of wellness programs,” said Bremen Senior Center Director Tanya Debick.

On Aug. 25, participants who completed the challenge were recognized during a ceremony at the Bremen Senior Center.

“You all need to give yourselves a big hand for exercising,” said Patricia Mitchell, wellness and prevention coordinator at Tanner’s Get Healthy, Live Well. “Exercise is the key of staying healthy. We are certainly happy and always excited to come out here and partner with you all.”

Each participant received a Tanner bag, a #SummerOfHealth stress ball in the shape of a flamingo, a water bottle and other Tanner giveaways.

Participants who didn’t meet the 50-mile goal received a pink flamingo for their yard to remind them to keep walking. Those who completed 50 miles received a T-shirt with Get Healthy, Live Well’s Summer of Health logo on the front and an image of the campaign’s flamingo mascot on the back.
