A Surgical Solution for GERD

If your medication isn’t giving you relief from chronic symptoms from GERD, a surgical solution might be for you.

What is GERD?

GERD, is a digestive disorder that occurs when the small muscular opening at the end of your esophagus that leads to your stomach is not working properly and allows stomach acid to be released (acid reflux), causing symptoms such as:

  • Heartburn
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Chest pain
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Nausea

Diagnosis - GERD

How is GERD treated?

GERD is typically treated through prescribed medications. If medication does not provide relief, surgeons also can perform a procedure where a top portion of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to make it difficult for acid to escape the stomach.

A new surgical solution for GERD

For patients who have not found relief using medications, Tanner offers a minimally invasive, outpatient surgical solution to GERD called the LINX Reflux Management System.

What is the LINX Reflux Management System?

LINX uses a band of magnetic titanium beads that are placed around the base of the esophagus near the stomach. The LINX system allows patients digest normally without experiencing the burning symptoms of GERD.

How does LINX work?

When you swallow, the force pushes the magnetic beads apart, opening and closing them around the esophagus. This allows food to enter the stomach and prevents acid from rising into the esophagus.

Heartburn? Indigestion? Is Surgery Right for You? - José Espinel, MD

The three main symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are heartburn, regurgitation and difficulty swallowing, according to José Espinel, MD, a board-certified general surgeon with Carrollton Surgical Group. GERD is treated with medication as a first step, followed by surgery. Two surgical options, one that recreates a valve using your stomach and the other that inserts a circle of magnetic beads called LINX, can both be performed using minimally invasive robotic surgery, resulting in less post-operative pain and a faster recovery than traditional surgery.
